Great Resource for beginning and intermediate theory

Stein's compilation of essays presents an interesting view of works from the 18th-21st centuries in a variety of essays that are fairly short. There is a nice variety of reading and theoretical levels as well, making this book a good choice for both beginning and intermediate theory classes.

Where do you go when you know first year theory, and most books are too smart or too dumb?

Engaging Music does not suppose a large degree of knowledge on the part of its readers, though it does presume basic first year theory, which is what makes it great.

Ostensibly about analysis the book contains a wealth of ideas in many areas. A broad range of genres are covered include the common practice period (classical), modernist, jazz, and rock. Topics covered include phrase rhythm, hypermeter, Schenkerian analysis, twelve-tone theory, form, and musical ambiguity. My favorite essays: "Form in Rock Music" and "Introduction to Musical Ambiguity".

Incredible connection of BMS

As an integrative therapist, I see these connections all the time. The chakra/thought/physical/emotional connections in what we hold and what then holds us. This book is a wonderful read, easy and engrossing with great information about the authors' own experience. I thoroughly recommend it to my students and to those interested in learning more about how the bodymind connection works in order to look deeper at who they are and are becoming.

About the Author
Judith M. Barringer is Professor of Greek Art and Archaeology in Classics at the University of Edinburgh. Her areas of specialization are Greek art and archaeology and Greek history, myth, and religion. Professor Barringer is the author of Art, Myth, and Ritual in Classical Greece (Cambridge University Press, 2008); The Hunt in Ancient Greece (2001); and Divine Escorts: Nereids in Archaic and Classical Greek Art (1995) and co-editor (with Jeffrey M. Hurwit) of Periklean Athens and Its Legacy: Problems and Perspectives (2005). She has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and the British Academy, among others. She was a Blegen Research Fellow at Vassar College and a Senior Fellow at the Internationales Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften in Vienna, and she currently holds a Marie Curie Fellowship at the Institut für Klassische Archäologie at the Freie Universität Berlin from the M4Human Programme of the Gerda Henkel Stiftung.

Great Historical Text

I got this book as part of my collection of violin making. I study the topic quite extensively, hoping to one day to make my own. Most of the books out there though are kind of pricey since it is such a small field. I was really glad to see this book for such a low price! It is a reprint from an early 20th century manuscript. It even contains the original ads that were included by shops and makers of the day. As far as I know, the information about the mixes and amounts for each varnish and so on hasn't change, although some of the historical, geographical information has. The author uses old names or countries like Siam for Thailand when describing where to procure materials such as beetle wings or fine powders. Obviously that might not be the case today, but it is very interesting to look at the recipes used and the theory behind why oil varnish is actually a means of sealing and protecting the instrument from decay while spirit varnish is just for show and doesn't protect the instrument or preserve it like Oil is intended too. Recommend for all luthiers and enthusiasts.

A sturdy, inexpensive printing of an excellent textbook

I teach a course in Applied Statistics (Computer Science and Software Engineering) using this book. The book's explanations are clear, the examples are well-chosen and there is a large collection of exercises. There are answers for about half the exercises in the back of the book, and the publisher sells a reasonably-priced student manual with full solutions to this half of the exercises.

In this note, I'm reviewing the 8th Economy Edition, an Asian reprint of the American book that sells at a much lower cost. Several of my students use this edition instead of the American 8th and I have a copy of it. The book is paperback, so it is not indestructible, but all of the copies I've seen are standing up well to heavy use. The print is clear. The graphics are greyscale rather than the American edition's color, but I don't see any resulting ambiguity or loss of information. Overall, this edition appears to be a fully-functional substitute for the full-price textbook.

Recommend purchasing any other statistics book

As a former student of statistics, I do not recommend purchasing this text. The book possesses multiple grammatical errors (many of which confuse the context of the problem), multiple incorrect answers provided in the back of the book, and multiple mistakes in the given information for a problem. This book will utilize variables without explanation, pose "real world" problems with little to no contextual background required to solve the problem, and skip many important topics vital to real world applications. I am currently writing to the editor in an effort to receive a refund for this book. I would NOT recommend this text to any student or professional.

Not Good

This is probably the second worst textbook I have ever read. I have struggled through the third chapter. In some cases, the text seems as though it was written for elementary school math covering set therory: extremely detailed and excessively verbose. In other cases, the text throws out examples without explaining any reasoning, or any how or why a formula is used.

The text continually refers to examples in previous sections, which forces the reader to search back through the text. The interuption is distracting and annoying. In many cases, the page numbers where the example can be found are not given. The text also does this with the exercises, forcing the student to wear-out the pages. Sometimes, I feel as though I need two copies of the textbook so I don't waste so much time thumbing back and forth.

I have ended up reading and re-reading the text while trying to understand some of the concepts and rational. In some areas, the author does not explain anything. While other times, the text continues for pages explaining things that an elementry school graduate should know. I am waiting to see multiplication tables in future chapters. All the while, some college level information is brushed-over. I typically need to work several exercises and beat my head against the wall a few times until I go ah ha! Why didn't the author explain this.

With textbooks like this, it is no wonder engineers have a reputation for poor communication skills.
