A book every aspiring artist should own.

Al's books are a wealth of information. This is no exception. It has a lot of carving ideas, and gives us the stamp number required to perform details in the carve. It is a large book, and does take some time to absorb all the details. I think this book is a value to any one who wants to carve leather.
Carving leather is almost a lost art. Most people, and/or leather workers tend to stamp leather. There is even a rumor that carving leather somehow weakens the leather. This is completely untrue.
I have seen a leather carver at work. I have seen a bunch more leather stampers. Leather carving is one of the great beauty's in life. I would almost consider it the eighth wonder of the world. There is nothing quite as beautiful as a carved piece of leather.
I live in the west where we have several saddle and harness makers. Of the dozen or so shops, only one carves leather. It is a skill that requires practice, practice, practice. It requires patience, and a few tools.
I took a 15 hour tooling course from a local carver which showed me some of what was required that the book does not tell, like tracing patterns, and transferring to leather. Other books do tend to offer some more insight, but all in all this book just about covers the trade.

Very Nice illustration and help

Very happy with the quality of this book. While I do not claim to be a pro, my humble opinion is that this book is for somebody that has the 'knack' for leather tooling. If you have done at least 5-6 wallets as an example and you are continuously improving the quality of your work then this book is for you. The reason I am saying that while this book provides hints and guidance on how to achieve good results, it will not spoon feed very detailed information. The designs and bag/wallet patterns are very nice and I made many friends and relatives happy thanks to this book.

Being new to leather carving and learning the craft on my own, I found the book helpful. The instructions/directions on the use of the various tools is very basic, but with the right/wrong images in the book I found things very easy to understand. A pretty decent book for visual learners.

Decent historical reference on political economy.

I am a student of Stephen Gill at York University in Toronto, Canada. This book was therefore required course reading for me. It is a very thorough from a historical materialist perspective. A good book for reference as the chapters are spit up into topics that usually run two pages in length. The only problem with this piece would lie in the fact that it is almost a decade old.

Many obviously not students of WWII history, sadly.

I read this book many years ago on a recommendation from a friend. I am a pilot and my grandfather a fighter pilot during World War II. I recall this book being a good read from that perspective.

My two cents are that if you are not a student of World War II American History, you aren't qualified to comment on items in the context of WWII. I for one am, and could type all day and not make many of you aware of the horrors visited on those fighting with or conqured by the Japanese Army of the day. Needless to say you will believe what you want to believe, especially the right-wing revisionists among you. Imagine that history only knows of the horrors (and their scope) as some poor surviving sole was able to disseminate them. Or that history is skewed in favor of the conquerors or revisionists that wrote it. That means that it is very likely that many of the horrors were far worse or just plain covered up. It only takes one, very graphic account, of Japanese soldiers carving babies out of pregnant women's bellies to make you begin to understand what I am talking about, to say nothing of the scum that participated in operations like Unit 731.

Be glad you didn't live then and have endure what many of our grandparents did, and that you benefited from their sacrifice. Who knows how you would have regarded the Japanese or the Germans or Italians had you fought them in World War II. I know veterans today, that abhor the Japanese to this day, and do I judge them for this seemingly racist bent. Hell no! No human should have had to see, hear and feel what they did. Do I begrudge them my admiration or respect? Again, Hell no! I am a veteran myself and if anything can identify with them.

I read very few new books these days. I find myself going back and reading those that stood out in my mind mostly. "God Is My Co-Pilot" is one on that list for me to re-read. I read it in High School many years ago and yet it is clear in my mind what the story entailed. A young pilot struggling to survive aeriel battles over China to keep the Japanese from taking over. Robert Scott's book is based on his real life experiences while he was helping the Flying Tigers try to support China in it's fight against the invading Japanese. At times the story is quite tense. The book's title is based on one harrowing flight that Scott barely survived. It strengthened his faith and prompted him to recount his story. I highly recommend this to anyone, but especially those that enjoy good war stories. If you enjoyed this read "Defiance: The Bielski Partisans".
