This is the (mostly) true story of my great grandmother

The author, Bryce Courtenay, is my uncle via marriage, and is a best-seller in Australia.

My great grandmother is the subject of this book. There are embellishments, based on what I've been told by other family members, but on the whole it's on the money. The embellishments help move the narrative forward--but her story is largely intact.

She was a PISTOL! You were NOT allowed into her kitchen when she cooked. Ever. So the world's best recipe for fried fish died with her. She was a tiny little thing--we called her "little Nanna", maybe 5 feet tall but likely smaller.

When we visited her home, with my Aunt Ada and Uncle Jack there too--it was like being enveloped in a warm towel of non-stop affection. Between her and Ada, me and my brothers couldn't get a breath! And the food! Incredible.

I last saw her, before she died, in 1970 I think. I was living in Japan at the time and visiting home in Australia. Jack had passed by then, so it was just her and Ada. I loved every single minute with the both of them.

Not one of his best

I have been a big fan of Bryce Courtenay's books ever since a friend lent me The Power of One 11 years ago which is to this day still one of my favorite books. I was disappointed in this one. It is more of a collection of short stories tied together very loosely by their being told while dinner was cooking. Most of the stories are rather unbelievable and lacking the usual powerful imagery that Courtenay does so well. I recently read Four Fires and if you are looking for a new Courtenay book to spend some time with, I would personally point you in that direction.

Bloody Brilliant!

Whoa! This book has it all! It has its sad moments, sad enough to make you cry. The characters's hope is heart warming. An the outcome is absolutely inspiring!

The story in a nutshell is about a group of Russians who have escaped and fled there invaded village to find a new place to live their lives in peace. Everyday this group of refugees, who have all different backgrounds and personalities, have to walk across Russia in the snow. The main character (can't remember her name) leads the group and everynight she takes out her large iron frying and the group all put what scraps and pieces of food in the pan and cook just enough food to stay alive. While eating, each night a person will tell a story. Some are tragic, sad, inspiring, mysterious and all are unique. The ending of this Novel is truly inspiring!

The Family Frying Pan is a novel different from Bryce's other ones. And isn't his usual type of story. When I first saw it I though it was a cookbook. Anyway it's probably my favourite book and is really, i mean REALLY worth reading! So go pick it up! Hope you all like it! It would make a great movie, Hopefully one day it is! Great work there Bryce Courtney!

A Good Resource

A good introductory survey of philosophical topics as they were treated by various medieval thinkers throughout the entire period, from late antiquity and the commentators of Aristotle, to the inception of the humanists. The survey combines what is properly called intellectual history and philosophy proper. The historical aspect is kept to a minimum (as it ought to be in a philosophy book) without sacrificing salient features of the historical context in which the topic under discussion occurred. The philosophy, on the other hand, is more developed and Kenny has an emphasis on concept explanation, as opposed to explicating arguments; though he does do both at times.

This includes the following topics: God, Mind and Soul, Logic and Language, Knowledge, Physics, Metaphysics, Ethics, as well as an excellent treatment of philosophy and religious belief from Augustine to Maimonides,and scholasticism from the twelfth century renaissance (Abelard and the 'nominales' school) to the so-called renaissance proper (roughly 1360-1550), at which point scholasticism began to give way to the new schoolman, the humanists.

Kenny is especially good at explaining the intellectual current of a given period and how such a current has bearing on the topic at hand, this is particularly seen in his discussion of physics. As such, the historical context of each topic and its subsequent development is presented thoroughly but briefly; however, little attention is given to the explication of any particular thinker's arguments on any given topics. For that reason, you will find little critical analysis of the particular arguments presented.

All in all it's an excellent work, written clearly and informatively, by a very capable philosopher. It's a good introduction for undergraduates at the freshman and sophomore level. But if you've had more than a survey course in medieval philosophy, you need something with a bit more depth.

A fine overview for students or non-specialists

This fine book, the second volume in Kenny's A New History of Western Philosophy, provides an overview of the major figures and issues in the philosophy of the European Middle Ages. Kenny takes an "intellectual history" approach in the opening section to provide necessary historical context and biographical information on the major figures he will be discussing. In the longer second part of the book, he turns to philosophical issues per se, tackling, in turn, "Logic and Language," "Knowledge," "Physics," "Metaphysics," "Mind and Soul," "Ethics," and "God." Kenny organizes this discussion around a who's who of the major medieval philosophers, including Augustine, Boethius, Avicenna, Anselm, Abelard, Aquinas, Duns Scotus, and Ockham. The chapters on ethics and God, topics so important in the Christian philosophical matrix of the Middle Ages, are very good, but it is the chapter on logic and language that stood out to me as being particularly interesting--Kenny highlights the ways in which medieval thinkers were anticipating issues in the philosophy of language that have been very hot topics among philosophers of the last century.

Kenny's book will be useful to anyone with a more-than-casual interest in philosophy or in medieval intellectual history. It may prove too difficult for absolute beginners with no philosophical background. Non-specialist academics and students, among others, will relish the book both for the helpfulness of its content and for the charm and grace of Kenny's writing.

Great overall reference!

I took classes in philosophy for years and I have to say that I was very surprised with this book. Kenny has a great knack for rephrasing the arguments of the Schoolmen in modern philosophical vocabulary without loss of substance. You'll be shocked by how relevant medieval philosophy really is; I'm a little angry undergrad students aren't made more aware of this material. This book accomplishes what every history aspires to: you close the book feel well-informed and freshly energized about the craft of philosophy.

The only minor downsides to the book are stylistic. A few strangely-worded cultural references make you feel like you're listening to 'Old Man Kenny' on occasion. More seriously, there are some instances where it's a little hard to follow the narrative voice, leaving you unsure at first where critical exposition ends and judgment begins. Thankfully, though, these defects are minimal in number and effect. Anyone with a moderate interest in philosophy will find this a worthwhile purchase.

Great book, one area for improvement

This is a great book. The only complaint that I have is that the author does not posses a strong foundation in Fertility Awareness Method (FAM). She mentions several times that you are ovulating if you have physical signs of ovulation but does not go into enough detail. The only way to know if you are ovulating besides exquisitely timed ultrasound, is to track your basal body temperature to see a thermal shift. OPKs (pee sticks) only predict when your body is trying to ovulate, not that it has or will. When and if a woman ovulates is vital information from a functional medicine standpoint. In women's health it is so important for women to understand and chart their cycles. Just recording the days of your period is inadequate when troubleshooting cycle problems. I highly recommend finding a fertility awareness educator to help you learn how to do this; You won't regret it! [...]
This author is an incredible resource for reproductive health and dare I say a "trailblazer" in the field! I love the way Dr. Briden makes it clear that you don't have periods when you are on the pill. Bleeds do not equal periods. Pills do not "regulate" periods, they hijack them and suppress ovulation. Bleeds are a result of withdrawing off the synthetic hormones. Most people (including doctors) do not understand this crucial point. She has great dietary advice as well. Her herbal knowledge is admirable.
Overall, the book is an excellent read for women looking to improve their periods and their health. I look forward to future editions with more information on Fertility Awareness Method because it is a vital component to cycle health; a woman's fifth vital sign.

super bad insomnia

First of all, I am so lucky to have read this book- it has changed my life.
Before I read Period Repair Manual, I had never had a normal period in my life. I am 23 and started my period at 12. My periods were always 'heavy' but I never knew that around 155ml of blood and 8 days of a period was actually too heavy. When I started changing my lifestyle to improve my period health, I had many other health problems besides a heavy period. I also had iron deficiency, super bad insomnia, thrombocytopenia, unusually awful PMS, and I was still reeling from the terrible side effects of birth control (specifically aviane brand pills).
After 4 months of following the advice proffered in Period Repair Manual, I finally had my first normal period (for a vegan)! It was about 3 days long and 40ml- and I didn't have any PMS, my sleeping and mood/energy improved greatly and I no longer have thrombocytopenia. I recommend this book to all of my friends and relatives who feel the effects of their cycles and want to improve their lives.

I am so fortunate to have stumbled across this book; as I'm sure any other woman would be. My review is every single woman on earth should and needs to have access to the knowledge given in this book. Buy it, read it, change your life for the better.

I wanted to bring my period back naturally (not take Provera like they kept pushing)

I was on BC for 8 years. After coming off the pill and not having a period for ~6 months I got worried and visited 2 Dr's. I was diagnosed with PCOS and was told that I was pre-menopausal, had premature ovarian failure, and it would be very hard to get pregnant (and i'm a very healthy 25 year old!). I wanted to bring my period back naturally (not take Provera like they kept pushing), so I bought this book after lots of research. I took the Peony and Licorice supplement for Type II PCOS and I regained my period after exactly 50 days! This book is extremely easy to read, straight-forward, and well-written. Laura really knows her stuff and seems to have a deeper grasp on PCOS/fertility issues than any other book/blog I have read or any doctor I have visited. I HIGHLY recommend reading this book!
