The title's a bit misleading--it's not about cardiac care and it's not about calculus, but rather how 30 years of research have shown that the heart's "intelligence" affects emotions and physical health--especially when it comes to handling stress--and specifically what you can do to balance heart rhythms, reduce stress hormones, and boost your immune system. Yes, it sounds complicated, especially when you read that cardiologists worked with physicists and psychiatrists to develop the HeartMath program. But it's worth brushing off your skepticism and exploring the concepts in the Solution, as many employees of Fortune 500 companies have already done.

The "intelligence" that the authors focus on refers to both the heart's "brain," or the 40,000 neurons found in the heart (the same number in the brain itself), and the intuitive signals the heart sends, including feelings of love, happiness, care, and appreciation. When such positive emotions are felt, they "not only change patterns of activity in the nervous system; they also reduce the production of the stress hormone cortisol." When there's less cortisol, there's more DHEA, the so-called fountain of youth hormone known to have anti-aging effects on many of the body's systems.

The HeartMath Solution outlines 10 steps for harnessing the power of the heart's intelligence, including ways to manage your emotions and keep energy levels high. Extremely useful personally and professionally.

This book is a synthesis of all I have learned, known, and intuited throughout my 30 years in the mental health field, including over 20 years as a psychotherapist.
The material is presented in a concise, readable manner, and the HeartMath exercises are simple and easily learned, especially Freeze Frame.
I am personally utilizing the Freeze Frame and Cut-Through exercises and am amazed at how quickly one gets to the"heart" of feelings, problems, etc. Although I have been a meditator for 17 years, the methods described in this book have opened up new and creative aspects of myself.
My clients have experienced equally exciting and insightful results.
I would unqualifiedly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in stress reduction, better health, personal growth, and a more peaceful way of being in this increasingly complex and fast-paced culture.

How to put your heart at the heart of everything you do!

"Care is an oil that lubricates the entire mental, emotional, and physical system. If you run your system without care, it's like running your car without oil - resulting in friction and breakdown."
If you've read many personal development books, you know that to find a truly original idea is rare. The best authors have the gift of saying something old in a new way that makes it more accessible; the worst simply have the temerity to say something old the way it's always been said and stick their names on the front cover.
What sets Doc Childre and the Heartmath team aside is that they actually came up with something new, and then back it up with a set of simple techniques to put their findings into practice.
Their discovery is that the physical heart has a lot more to do with our health and well-being than we ever thought possible, and that the simple act of "activating heart energy" by focusing attention on your physical heart and feeling sincere feelings of love, care, and appreciation reduces stress, strengthens our immune system, and gives us a reliable means to access our intuition.
The Heartmath Solution is a great overview of their work, yet practical enough to begin benefitting from immediately. As an added bonus for those of you tired of the "fuzzy science" that many new-age tomes use to "prove" reincarnation, alien abduction, and the existence of Lemuria, the "math" part of heartmath actually stands up to some examination. Studies measuring ECG, HRV, IGA, DHEA and just about every other set of initials you can think of help satisfy the part of our brain that cries out for a rational explanation for something we all intuitively know - that love is good!

Spiritual Practices with a Secular Coating, I Think

This book offers three practices. The practices all begin with "breathing through the heart" and then apply the resulting state in various ways:

- "Freeze Frame" interrupts and redirects useless thought-feeling patterns

- "Cut-Thru" slowly or quickly dissolves longstanding problems

- "Heart Lock-In" allows one to rest in, and to share, profoundly good experience

Each of these practices ends with "listening to the intuition of the heart," which may give either insights or next steps to take.

All three work with "the heart," which seems to be both the physical heart whose rhythms can be measured and the experiential heart. Heartmath both works with subjective experience and measures it objectively. From that both-ness comes the surprising name, Heartmath.

I find from trying them that all three practices work. The Freezeframe interruptor really does break into unfortunate cycles of thought and feeling. CutThru does give an easing of long-term issues, though it does not undo them suddenly. And the unfortunately-named Heart Lock-In does seem to be a resting and recharging meditation.

The practices have all been tested empirically. The book is full of graphs of the results, and some of the studies has been published in journals. The authors have been careful to use business-language, speaking of the "efficiency" and "coherence" of different feeling states.

The language and the testing seem to be ways of making very old spiritual practices palatable to skeptical people of our time. Christianity, Judaism and Islam all understand the importance of the breath and the heart to the living being, and so do Hinduism and Buddhism. It appears the creators of Heartmath have translated old wisdom into new and practical forms for our times. Bravo to them!

You have to read this book! Almost better than Harry Potter. This is a great series and I could not put the books down. I read for at least an hour every night. This is a mind twisting adventure and the best one in the series.

Okay Conclusion to the Series

This was an okay conclusion to the series, although honestly to me the series started out good but fizzled a little at the end and was rushed.

Volume 4 begins with Lynn in the back of the limo along with Dane and her parents on the way to her college graduation. She's just received the phone call from Caroline that Simon is in the hospital and has been calling out her name. When Lynn instructs the limo to turn around and take her to the hospital, both her parents and Dane ignore her plea. Once the limo stops however, she jumps out and runs. She's determined to check on Simon. Only when she arrives, Caroline has her physically removed from the ICU unit by hospital security.

Dane is extremely jealous of Simon and will do whatever is necessary to keep her. He decides working for his dad in the New York office is the best option and will take Lynn away from Simon. When he asks Lynn if she'll go with him, he's thrilled when she tells him yes. But then he discovers that Simon is missing from the hospital and Lynn is nowhere to be found. He knows she's with Simon again.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS SO STOP READING NOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM.........

I personally never liked Dane at all. It was obvious from the beginning he was using Lynn to make Simon mad, although I do think he really fell for her in the end. Unfortunately, I was never able to connect with Lynn in the series and never felt she deserved with guy. She made some of the worst decisions ever and rarely took the blame. She still cares about Simon, even sneaks back to the hospital to see him, yet she tells Dane she wants to be with him and then sleeps with him. Her parents even catch them, then she's with Simon the next day and her parents are okay with that. The ending felt rushed and unrealistic. Simon was hardly in this volume at all and he's the only one I liked from the series.

It looks like Dane will get his own series, unfortunately for $2.99 a pop and barely 100 pages, I'm afraid I won't be reading more. Please remember this review is entirely my own and contains my personal thoughts about the book. Chances are, you may not agree but I try to be fair and leave reviews for not only the books I love, but also the ones I don't enjoy as much.

I loved the story line

This series had a lot of potential but I'm very disappointed with the whole Dane and Katelyn part of this story. Rather upset me and I very nearly didn't finish it. If that hadn't been part of the story I would have given it 5 stars. This is just my personal opinion and others shouldn't judge them by what I say.

Who will she choose

Simon is in a coma after a motorcycle accident and he mumbles Lynn's name. Lynn ditches Dane, her parents,and her graduation to go to the hospital to only be rejected by his mother and not letting her see him.
Dane tries hard to keep Lynn away from Simon and with him by asking her to move with him to new York.
I wish there was more interaction with Dane and Simon with Lynn. I liked the other books in this series.
I'm excited about the other books from this author.

About the Author
Dr. Rexford E. Santerre, Professor of Finance and Healthcare Management at the University of Connecticut, has taught at the college level for more than 25 years. In addition to co-authoring HEALTH ECONOMICS, he has written numerous articles for various general and specialty academic journals, including the American Journal of Public Health, Applied Health Economics and Health Policy, Economic Inquiry, Healthcare Management Review, Health Economics, International Journal of Health Care Finance and Economics, Journal of Law and Economics, Medical Care Research and Review, National Tax Journal, Public Choice, Southern Economic Journal, and The Review of Economics and Statistics. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Stephen Neun is Vice President for Academic Affairs at Antioch University New England. He previous served as Academic Dean at Anna Maria College, as Professor of Economics, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, and as Dean of the School of Graduate and Extended Studies at Utica College. In addition to co-authoring HEALTH ECONOMICS, he has published articles on Federal Reserve policy and the location decision of primary care. He also has published articles on executive compensation and corporate control in such journals as the Quarterly Journal of Business, Economics and Managerial Decision Economics, and The Review of Economics and Statistics. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Connecticut.

Excellent book, well written, very informative

Required reading for my Economics of Healthcare class, but the book was entirely fascinating and interesting. Made me look at insurance and healthcare differently.

Useful, especially with the upcoming elections. Very insightful on economics of the healthcare system in several countries.

Great Cancer Information

A scientific look into laetrile...

Harold Manner, PhD was a fairly orthodox biology professor at Loyola University in Chicago. He then decided to study the controversial chemical "laetrile," more properly called amygdalin. He admits in this book that his late 1970s studies would either elevate or damn the anti-cancer substance. His research was some of the most blatant pro-laetrile research ever conducted, which "dropped a bombshell" on medical orthodoxy.
'Death of Cancer' chronicles Dr. Manner's research on laetrile, enzymes, vitamin C, and vitamin A against cancer. This combination caused complete cancer regression in 90% of the breast cancer ridden rats tested. Each chapter gives a scientific look at each key component to his research. There is a whole chapter devoted to enzymes, to laetrile, etc. Since many writers about laetrile are journalists, laypeople, ultra-conservatives, or non-academics, I was often left wanting to know more. Dr. Manner answers many questions about the chemical make-up of amygdalin (and other cyanide producing sugars), how amygdalin differs from "laetrile," and various modes of action of vitamin A, etc. While the book might not *convince* a scientific skeptic, or even provide a 100% satisfying rationale behind amygdalin, it at least engages laetrile on an academic level.
Unfortunately laetrile has never been officially shown to be as effective as Dr. Manner's early research promised. However, the official "test" of laetrile continued despite objections from Manner, and questions of patient selection and amygdalin purity were raised. Perhaps Dr. Manner should have been directly involved. Either way, this book reflects one side in the struggle to determine whether laetrile really controls and prevents cancer. Today, some of Dr. Manner's assumptions about digestive enzymes are being confirmed by new human and animal research (by Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez and Wobe Mugos enzyme makers).
I highly suggest `Death of Cancer' for anyone wanting to study laetrile, its history, or its value. Come with an open, yet critical mind. While the book is long out of print, the original 1978 edition lacks an interview with Dr. Manner that the 1988 edition has. This 1988 interview, done shortly before Dr. Manner's death, is also helpful to understanding the laetrile issue.

Information is Out of Date Now

Written quite a while ago, this was once quite cutting edge, but science has now left it behind. Many of the premises have been disproven, and the book has far too much chemistry for the average person to read. Read with caution if you read it at all, and then get a new, more current treatment of the subject. We know so much more now that we did 25 years ago.
