How did the Depression-era folk-song collector Alan Lomax end up with a songwriting credit on Jay-Z’s song “Takeover”? Why doesn’t Clyde Stubblefield, the primary drummer on James Brown recordings from the late 1960s such as “Funky Drummer” and “Cold Sweat,” get paid for other musicians’ frequent use of the beats he performed on those songs? The music industry’s approach to digital sampling—the act of incorporating snippets of existing recordings into new ones—holds the answers. Exploring the complexities and contradictions in how samples are licensed, Kembrew McLeod and Peter DiCola interviewed more than 100 musicians, managers, lawyers, industry professionals, journalists, and scholars. Based on those interviews, Creative License puts digital sampling into historical, cultural, and legal context. It describes hip-hop during its sample-heavy golden age in the 1980s and early 1990s, the lawsuits that shaped U.S. copyright law on sampling, and the labyrinthine licensing process that musicians must now navigate. The authors argue that the current system for licensing samples is inefficient and limits creativity. For instance, by estimating the present-day licensing fees for the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique (1989) and Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet (1990), two albums from hip-hop’s golden age, the authors show that neither album could be released commercially today. Observing that the same dynamics that create problems for remixers now reverberate throughout all culture industries, the authors conclude by examining ideas for reform.

Interviewees include David Byrne, Cee Lo Green, George Clinton, De La Soul, DJ Premier, DJ Qbert, Eclectic Method, El-P, Girl Talk, Matmos, Mix Master Mike, Negativland, Public Enemy, RZA, Clyde Stubblefield, T.S. Monk.

When your life is a lie, how do you know what's real? Alexandra Gastone has a simple plan: graduate high school, get into Princeton, work for the CIA, and serve her great nation. She was told the plan back when her name was Milena Rokva, back before the real Alexandra and her family were killed in a car crash. Milena was trained to be a sleeper agent by Perun, a clandestine organization from her true homeland of Olissa. There, Milena learned everything she needed to infiltrate the life of CIA analyst Albert Gastone, Alexandra's grandfather, and the ranks of America's top intelligence agency. For seven years, "Alexandra" has been on standby and life's been good. Grandpa Albert loves her, and her strategically chosen boyfriend, Grant, is amazing. But things are about to change. Perun no longer needs her at the CIA in five years' time. They need her active now.  Between her cover as a high school girl―juggling a homecoming dance, history reports, and an increasingly suspicious boyfriend―and her mission in this high-stakes spy game, the boundaries of her two lives are beginning to blur. Will she stay true to the country she barely remembers, or has her loyalty shattered along with her identity?

A Heart-Pounding Thriller
By Reader Gal
This is a well written, tightly plotted YA spy thriller with three-dimensional characters and a story full of surprises. The Washington D.C. area high school girl known as Alexandra Gastone -- with the adorable boyfriend who wonders why she’s behaving so strangely, the secret best friend with whom she shares a love of video games, and the devoted grandpa in the CIA -- is actually a sleeper spy, separated from her family when very young and trained for years to replace the real Alexandra. Indoctrinated with an intense patriotism and love of her native land, the so-called Alexandra has given up almost everything about her real self to serve the cause, and she’s sure she’s doing the right thing…until everything get complicated. Suddenly, her life could depend on figuring out where the truth lies and who to trust. I love that this story ended with a satisfying and shocking conclusion, but also cried out for a sequel, which I hope comes out soon! Excellent!

Bourne Identity for teens
By Lisa Amowitz
...They Call Me Alexandra Gastone is a fast-paced spy thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm pretty partial to spy thrillers in general, and this book did not disappoint. Maclagan managed to capture the every day life of a normal teen and deftly weave it with the taut and precarious existence of a sleeper cell living a lie, waiting for activation. The complexity of the Alexandra's world was very well thought out and plausible. This was a great, nail-biting read and I was happy to see that the author intends a sequel. I really want to know what kind of trouble Ms.Gastone lands herself in next!

An excellent young adult thriller to kickstart a new series
By Craig M Sisterson
An excellent young adult thriller that is a must-read for fans of complex heroines battling against powerful forces..

Teenager Alexandra "Lex" Gladstone has a fairly typical life in some ways - high school, boyfriend, college applications, doting grandfather - but in other ways she's completely unique.. Not just for her two eyes of different colours. Although they played a part in the twists her life took.

Years ago Lex was Milena, a young girl in Olissa, a state that has been battled over by the Russians, Iran, America and others. Recruited to Perun, a training academy for spies, she was groomed as a sleeper agent, indoctrinated to the quest for Olissian independence, then inserted into her mission: replacing the real Lex Gladstone, who died in a tragic car crash with her parents. Milena/Lex is raised by Albert, her American grandfather, who himself works for the CIA. She doesn't know when she will be called on to activate and undertake a mission. Until then, she's a regular American teenage girl. Even if she keeps everyone at distance.

Then she gets her mission, to assassinate the US-friendly President of Olissa, and pin the blame on her grandfather.

TA MacLagan weaves a page-turning tale, that is slickly written, and full of intrigue both in terms of the twisting plotline, and the character of Lex herself. An accomplished and highly trained young woman who battles with herself and where she fits, just like any teenager. Who tries to find a balance between her mission and her life.

There are some echoes of the likes of THE HUNGER GAMES, with its intriguing and kickass heroine up against the world, making choices that affect her and others' lives, and fans of that series may easily be hooked by the adventures of Alexandra Gastone. But TA MacLagan also brings something fresh in her storytelling. A great read.

Audie Award Finalist, Teens, 2014

It says quite a lot about Jeremy Johnson Johnson that the strangest thing about him isn't even the fact his mother and father both had the same last name. Jeremy once admitted he's able to hear voices, and the townspeople of Never Better have treated him like an outsider since. After his mother left, his father became a recluse, and it's been up to Jeremy to support the family. But it hasn't been up to Jeremy alone. The truth is, Jeremy can hear voices. Or, specifically, one voice: the voice of the ghost of Jacob Grimm, one half of the infamous writing duo, The Brothers Grimm.

Jacob watches over Jeremy, protecting him from an unknown dark evil whispered about in the space between this world and the next. But when the provocative local girl Ginger Boultinghouse takes an interest in Jeremy (and his unique abilities), a grim chain of events is put into motion. And as anyone familiar with the Grimm Brothers know, not all fairy tales have happy endings....

Young adult veteran Tom McNeal (one half of the writing duo known as Laura & Tom McNeal) has crafted a novel at once warmhearted, compulsively listenable, and altogether thrilling - and McNeal fans of their tautly told stories will not be disappointed.

Dark Fairy Tales
By Sesho
While I appreciated the ambience of the book, towards the end it veered way too dark and almost seemed like a Stephen King novel. I did enjoy the first 3/4 though. Not a chore to read by any means, but just not quite up to snuff.

A dark twisted contemporary fairy tale
By Jill
Ah Fairy Tales....I love them for all their weirdness and beauty and timelessness and did I say weirdness. Yes, this one starts out very weird. I thought it was too literary for me to enjoy. The stuffy Jacob Grimm narrates and he waxes prosaic about his lost brother and his time in the world after his death trying to find his way to his brother. Yes, I thought it was just going to be a little too much for me. I was wrong. Very wrong. Jacob Grimm basically lives one of his own fairy tales as an almost silent observer.

The characters in this story are numerous but only a few stand out. I will limit who I describe to Jeremy Johnson Johnson and Jacob Grimm.

Jeremy is a bit nerdy because all he does is study. But when you have a ghost telling you "studies, studies" all the time and you know your only ticket out of town is college and a scholarship, then you know you should study. And he's weird because he once told someone he hears voices. But he does and we know he does because we can hear Jacob Grimm talking to him throughout the novel. But, unfortunately, Jeremy has a tendency to talk to Jacob out loud and that makes him look even weirder. And Jeremy lives with his father in the back of the Two Book Bookstore which, as you may have guessed, sells only two books, the first and second volumes of Jeremy's grandfather's life story. Business isn't good. And, as if you need more to make a boy look weird, Jeremy's father stays in his room all day watching t.v. since Jeremy's mother left him. Life has not been kind to Jeremy. But he's a good boy, studies hard, is kind to everyone, friendly, wary, industrious (he has a lawn service business) and he takes care of his father.

Jacob Grimm's Ghost- Jacob's Ghost somehow got stuck on Earth after he passed away. He's been told by other ghosts it's because he's searching for something, but he has no idea what. He thought his brother would wait for him, but none of the other ghosts have seen or heard of his brother. Finally he determines that he needs to go to Never Better a place that can barely be seen but once found can never be forgotten and he must protect the boy, Jeremy Johnson Johnson from the Finder of Occasions. Jacob also takes it upon himself to be a sort of moral compass for Jeremy and tries to make him not do certain things because he has a bad feeling about it. Yeah, we all know how that goes.

The world- Never Better is a strange place. There seem to be children that disappear frequently, yet parents don't watch their children overly much. There are dark alleys and an old woman that searches the night for her lost son Possy. There is a police deputy that lurks everywhere, seemingly perverted spying on girls, the townspeople, anyone he can blackmail. There is a jolly baker with a generous hand with his baked goods. But there's a darkness that overlays even the simplest of moments in the town. Something lurks behind the windows and the trees and the trashcans. It follows you home, even in the bright sunshine. There is a timelessness to the town as well. Certain references date it such as game shows and bikes and trains, but truly I would have thought it could have taken place in Jacob Grimm's time.

The Story- Ginger Boultinghouse takes an interest in Jeremy Johnson Johnson and this makes Jeremy Johnson Johnson take an interest in her. After a few days of her showing interest, she shows up in his window at night and dares him to pull a prank. Not being the pranking type, it goes awry and Jeremy is implicated in it. The townspeople turn viciously against Jeremy and then begins a sort of twisted Hansel and Gretel story. Very, very twisted.

What I thought- As I said, the first time I tried to read it, I thought it was very literary and I was not in the mood. I picked it up again and was enthralled. I really couldn't put it down once I got past the first part and I understand why the first part is there. Just don't think the whole story is like that. It is definitely a contemporary fairy tale, a dark one. There is magic and a love story and a ghost. And a definite tribute to The Brothers Grimm. But it's definitely creepy and dark and you know something isn't right, but you can't quite put your finger on it. When it happens I hope you'll feel the same sense of desperation I did. I had no idea how it would turn out and I was amazed at how twisted and dark this tale turned in such a short amount of time. But things that had happened before started falling into place. And seemingly innocent things from before turn into dire warnings unheeded. Even Jacob Grimm falls victim.

I definitely recommend this for lovers of dark twisted tales! It's a contemporary fairy tale (no fairies) along the lines of the Brothers Grimm. This took me totally by surprise and I'm going to search out more of Tom McNeal's works.

I received a copy of the e-arc from the publisher through Net-Galley. All reviews are my own and are my honest opinion.

Intriguing idea, but a grim and uneven execution
By someproseandcon
This is a strange and unusual novel that is likely to be both loved and hated, depending on what a reader is looking for.

First, the positives. The book pulls readers in from the start with the eerie voice of the ghost of Jacob Grimm and his mysterious search for "the thing undone" in his mortal life: "I have been dead since the Saturday afternoon in September 1863 when I saw the elm tree in the garden dissolve into nothing." The ghost of Grimm has searched for a boy "who sleeps in an attic full of fairy tales" in order to protect him from the evil and tortured schemes of The Finder of Occasions. Jeremy Johnson Johnson is the boy, and his relationship with the ghost of Jacob Grimm is one of the strongest and most touching parts of the novel. The book is at its best when we hear the musings of the long-dead Jacob Grimm: the language and his unique perceptions are lovely and poignant.

I also enjoyed the plot twists that reveal the horrors of the evil waiting for Jeremy and his friends - the Finder of Occasions is a bone-chilling combination of a modern mass murderer and an ancient fairy tale villain. Additionally, the dark fairy tales of the Grimm brothers are woven throughout the story in a way that is wonderfully creepy.

And now the negatives: The supporting characters in the story, especially Jeremy's friend Ginger, are annoying and inconsistent in their speech and actions. Ginger is alternately whiney, devout, rebellious, sentimental, snide, loyal, and fickle. It's nearly impossible to get a sense of a real person, and she tosses off odd slang terms like "Zounds" and "fabulouso" so often that her speech begins to grate like nails on a chalkboard.

In addition to uneven character development, there are a number of plot lines that are never resolved, but rather left to hang (no spoilers, but what are readers to think about Jeremy's mother, Jacob's "thing undone," or the early plot teasers about the importance of books?).

This is a book that balances on a knife's edge: wonderfully unique and worth reading for its fantastic reimagining of the Grimm brothers' fairy tales, yet disappointing in its execution of that vision.

Excellent Practical Treatment of Feedback Control
By sp
There are many books available for courses in introductory feedback control in the mold of Ogata, Nise, Dorf, Franklin, etc... (As a side note, the book
by Franklin - Feedback Control of Dynamic Systems - is the best of the lot of the standard textbooks as it has the best, most practical, coverage of frequency domain techniques)

One major deficiency of the above mentioned books is that they do not prepare or enable the student (or working engineer) to design high-performance feedback control
systems as required by various industries (e.g., aerospace) . In practice, frequency domain design techniques for
designing compensators ("shaping the loop") based on Bode/Nyquist/Nichols techniques are what are most used due to plant/model uncertainties, exogenous disturbances, high-frequency noise, coupling of control loops, etc...)
This book (and its companion Volume 2) by Biernson is one of the few books I am aware of (as well as the book Classical Feedback Control by Lurie and Control System Design Guide by Ellis)
that focus on the techniques used most often in practice. Feedback control design is an art not a science but this
book will help the student or working professional learn invaluable techniques of design. Highly Recommended !
