About the Author
Ray Geide has spent much of his life studying the Bible and its words.

He was raised in a Christian home that was active in church and Bible study. His first book purchases as a teenager were two Bible dictionaries and a set of Bible encyclopedias.

Trained in the Bible (ThG, BA) and New Testament Greek (MDiv), this lifelong Bible student, Bible expert, and teacher has pastored several churches, pioneered the missionary movement in Russia, and written books and articles on the Bible.

For over thirty years he has conducted ground breaking research into the Bible's original meaning and has made great strides in breaking down the language barrier between it and today's readers.

Geide has also written three study guides: How to be Right - Romans, Step Away from the Law - Galatians, and What Part of Love One Another Don't You Understand - 1 John, 2 John, 3 John.

Breakthrough Translation Accurate and Applicable

Have you ever wondered why there are so many words in the Bible that seem to mean the same thing but when applied to the passage it doesn't mean what you think you should? The author of this translation spent more than 30 years carefully researching word meanings and applying that this work. His work comes from the fact that the Bible was translated over 600 years ago and the words used then are not the same as they are now. Word meanings change over time and with that it becomes difficult to know what a word meant 600 years ago and how it applies to life today. With that said let me say that I, personally, believe in the total inerrancy of the Word. I believe that it is and was totally 'God-breathed' as it says in 2 Timothy 3:16. I also believe it is totally our responsibility, as believers, to check out any passage or translation that does not 'ring true' for us with all the resources we have. So when I had a question about a passage I went to my Key Word Hebrew-Greek Study Bible, any or all of the commentary's I could find, a variety of other study Bibles, and did on-line research when necessary. Guess what? I never found a time when this translation was inaccurate or not applicable.

I received a copy of this Bible from Breakthrough Bible Publishing for the sole purpose of reading and review. The thoughts and comments in this review are totally my own and influenced only by my personal and life experiences. I have spent the past 6 months using this translation in teaching, study and worship experiences. It has shed light on some passages and taken me to new thoughts on things I already thought I knew. It is an excellent resource for any Bible teacher and I am delighted to add it to my library and highly recommend it for yours.

Great version for our time

Another New Testament translation? This one makes some pretty big claims. More accuracy, easier to understand, replacing misunderstood words with new ones, and correcting problems with other versions.

The Breakthrough Version of the N. T. is definitely a contemporary literal translation. Geide argues that many translations use words that mean something different to contemporary readers than they did to readers hundreds of years ago. He uses words contemporary readers can understand. For example, “repentance” becomes “saddened into changing your ways.” “Grace” becomes “generosity,” “salvation” becomes “rescue” and “mercy” becomes “forgiving kindness.

Here is how Geide explains 2 Tim. 2:15. He was teaching about studying the Bible in Russia when his interpreter told him their Bible did not say “study.” Checking that out in his Greek New Testament when he got home confirmed it. He realized that hundreds of years ago, “study” meant to make every effort, so that is how he translated the verse. He spent over thirty years studying word usage, Greek, etc., to come up what he feels is an easy and accurate rendering of the New Testament message.

In reading passages from this version, as a long time Christian, I had a feeling of losing the sacred words. “Grace” means something special to me that “generosity” does not come close to conveying. However, for the unchurched today, “grace” probably has no meaning whatsoever so “generosity” is a much better word to use.

A couple of features I really like in a translation include the use of italics to denote words not in the original but have been added for clarity or sentence structure. I also like that the words Jesus spoke while on earth are not in red.

This is definitely a translation worth checking out. It would be an especially good translation to give to people not familiar with the Bible. But it's good for long time Christians too. I do like reading a new translation because I often receive insight from the fresh rendering of a verse.

Great translation

The are many Bible translations and versions that have come out in recent years. Some people may consider this useless, but there are good reasons. Accuracy, clarity, and readability play a role in why new versions are put out. The New Testament: Breakthrough Version, by Ray Geide, intends to be as accurate as possible to the Greek text.

Reading through this version, it is easy to understand. The words are clear and a wide range of ages would be able to read them. Geide aimed for a balance between literal and dynamic translation; staying true to the original meaning, yet coherent enough to read through. I had no problem with how the translation read.

I cannot speak with any authority on how close this is to the Greek text. I do not read Greek, so whatever I may know of the Greek language is what I have heard over the years. As far as I can tell, it is an accurate translation when I compare it to the Bibles I have. Since I need both Old and New Testaments for studying, I will need to use other translations. However, I look forward to using the Breakthrough Version when I can. It provides a new and easy to understand look at the New Testament that I can use to prepare for lessons.

When scientists discovered thermophiles?primitive microorganisms that live in deep seafloor vents and eat hydrocarbons (chemicals like gasoline)?experts assumed the mysterious bugs had little to tell us about ourselves or about the earth's core. Cornell University Professor Emeritus Gold, however, who for 20 years directed the Cornell Center for Radiophysics and Space Research, here proposes the striking theory that "a full functioning... biosphere, feeding on hydrocarbons, exists deep within the earth, and that a primordial source of hydrocarbons lies even deeper." Most scientists think the oil we drill for comes from decomposed prehistoric plants. Gold believes it has been there since the earth's formation, that it supports its own ecosystem far underground and that life there preceded life on the earth's surface. The "deep hot biosphere" hypothesis would explain the thermophiles, the minerals and the oil Swedish drillers found in 1990 under rock where no one expected them. The hot goo and massed gas far under our feet would also explain some mysterious historical earthquakes (notably the New Madrid, Mo., shocker of 1811), and it would tell puzzled geologists why so many oil reserves just happen to sit underneath coal fields. As later chapters explain, if Gold is right, the planet's oil reserves are far larger than policymakers expect, and earthquake-prediction procedures require a shakeup; moreover, astronomers hoping for extraterrestrial contacts might want to stop seeking life on other planets and inquire about life in them.

About the Author
Thomas Gold is one of the most wide-ranging distinguished scientists of the 20th century. A member of Britain's Royal Society and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, he has made important discoveries in physiology (theory of hearing), astrophysics (theory of pulsars), cosmology (steady-state theory), and a theory of time, as well as the revolutionary contributions to geology and biology which appear in this book. Revolutionary science

This morning's New York Times featured an article "Methane in Deep Earth: A Possible New Source of Energy" reporting on new research that partly confirms the claim in this book-- that the methane deep in the earth's mantle is primordial (not due to decayed buried vegetation) and is the source of petroleum. The article showed how methane can be generated from water and carbonate rock when the applied pressure is equal to that found in the mantle.

Gold's book describes research done largely by Russians and Ukrainians on the origin of oil, which has been shamefully discounted and ignored in the West. The Western dogma, he claims, is just another one of those things that nearly everyone believes, but is wrong.

I love books like this. It opens up a whole new world of important ideas and questions that need to be addressed, and make the scientific dogmatists who have "proved" their hypothesis by superficial reasoning from the most meager of data, coupled with proof by endless repetition, look as foolish as the geologists who rejected continental drift, or the idiots who still revere Freudian psychoanalysis.

Evidence that he presents is pretty convincing and is a good example of how many diverse lines of evidence can make the convergence on the truth inevitable. Many of the pieces of evidence were quite unknown to the formulators of the "fossil fuel" dogma who emphasize the limited reserves available for extraction. The composition of the gas giant planets with their tremendous quantities of methane can be used to plausibly argue for primordial gas on earth as well. The increasing realization among petroleum geologists that at least some petroleum reservoirs are being filled from below is startling news to many readers. The biological "markers" seen in petroleum are introduced by bacteria to petroleum on its migration toward the surface provide an alternative and plausible explanation of the facts. That Ukraine generates a third of its oil from reservoirs below all sedimentary rock is astounding.

As a physicist at the corporate research labs of a major oil company, I've sat through many presentations of petroleum exploration experts with their tables of C13 data, interpreted as signs of age and origins of oil, and I even then recognized the signs of smoke and mirrors. I only wish I'd read Gold earlier...

Gold's book is also concerned with many other aspects of the consequences of the presence of biology deep within the earth that are just as intriguing. That microbes exist deep in the earth and have a life style entirely independent from photosynthetic energy from the sun is an idea that is only now beginning to be accepted by some of the more daring Western petroleum engineers. Russians have known this for more than fifty years. The idea that better earthquake predictions can be made, and that fossil fuel reserves are much greater than publicized in the popular press, are big, important ideas that would have tremendous political impact if true.

I very much enjoyed Gold's style of writing, which is clear and straightforward, and the story he tells is a very important one, deserving of much more attention and research. The book has a gratifying number of illustrations and is well organized. The notes give a good introduction to the scientific literature on the subject, but I think some criticism can be leveled at Gold for writing as though he had been a major discoverer of many of the pieces of evidence, when he is actually playing more of a role as a popularizer for the findings of the Russians and others. But reviewers, and even popularizers, are not to be sneered at. They play an important and honorable role in the progress of science--Gold does an outstanding job here. Well worth reading.

Convincing arguments for a new paradigm

This is a very well written book. It presents a sequence of inter-related arguments suggesting radical re-thinking of the source of oil and gas on earth, the causes of earthquakes, and the origins of life. The arguments are consistent and to me, with no formal training in chemistry, physics or geology, convincing. What persuaded me most, was the way Gold's arguments tie-in with other research which correlate the discovery of oil and gas deposits with impact craters from asteroids, and many recent reports of new life forms in caves, in rocks, and under the sea. Life forms that thrive independently of solar energy. I have two reasons for giving this book a four star rating, instead of a five star rating. First, geologists I have talked to about the book have presented counter-arguments that might have been foreseen by Gold and answered in this book. (Those arguments have not convinced me Gold is wrong.) Second, the book would have been stronger if Gold had tied in the research I mentioned at the end of the previous paragraph. Still, Gold is only one man! And he writes much better than I do. Buy the book if you are willing to think outside the box.

Turning the World Upside Down

The phrase `paradigm shift' gets thrown around pretty loosely these days, but this book represents the real thing. For many years Thomas Gold has been the prime proponent of a theory that, if true, would change many commonly accepted theories in both geology and biology. In short, he believes that "fossil fuels' are generated be deep, underground methane sources that feed a vast subterranean biosphere of bacteria. If Gold is right, a lot of what we have been teaching for the last century is wrong. This is the kind paradigm shift that, literally, would require that the text books be rewritten. Scientists will not accept it unless the evidence is overwhelming. Gold recognizes this and he supports his theory with a great deal of evidence representing several independent lines of reasoning. In my mind, he succeeds in making his case. I opened the book as a skeptic, but I am now convinced that Gold is probably right. I look forward to watching the new consensus emerge.

A very poor introduction to one of the most fascinating eras in philosophy's history

Given how clearly this book is written, it's a real pity it's not very good. I read this book with a view to giving it undergraduate students as a light introduction to medieval philosophy, instead I've had to add it to the category "Do not read, as it will seriously mislead!" The book is incredibly superficial and skips over many central issues (and all the while mixing modern and medieval ontology as if there's no difference). The chapter on the medieval problem of universals is extremely superficial, and still managed to wander away from the central issue. All of two and a half pages are devoted to the treatment of universals in the High Middle Ages, one of the central philosophical issues of the day. Aquinas gets about one third of a page, Duns Scotus about half a page, whereas Ockham gets nearly an entire page. Needless to say, this is a weak and almost pointlessly brief treatment of one of the most important philosophical debates between the 12th to 14th centuries. You'll find a far deeper discussion of this topic in most books of medieval Church history, or in any book that touches on mediaeval thought in any way. Koterski's introduction is perhaps best avoided (unless you're into Radical Orthodoxy, in which case it's a definite step up!)

Instead of this book I would recommend: John Marenbon's Medieval Philosophy: A Historical and Philosophical Introduction [which is informative, and philosophically rich], or Anthony Kenny's [remarkably clear and compelling] Medieval Philosophy (volume 2 of A New History of Western Philosophy) or Armaund Maurer's classic text Medieval Philosophy [which is hard to beat for its depth and clarity].

Readable Jesuit intro to medieval philosophy

Father Joe Koterski SJ, a Jesuit philosopher at Fordham University, authors this highly readable little monograph on medieval philosophy. As a former philosophy graduate student who struggles to stay awake when I read most contemporary philosophy books, I can tell you that much current philosophy is badly written. But Koterski shows here that good scholarship is never an excuse for poor, lazy, or self-aggrandizing writing. This book, emphasizing Aquinas among others, is one of the rare modern-day philosophy textbooks that is a pleasure rather than a headache to read. It would be nice to see it in an undergraduate or Masters-level medieval course.

While it's true that Koterski simplifies medieval philosophy quite a bit here, synthesizing its key principles in a way that may be too neat for some scholars, I personally appreciated this approach very much. And a good teacher can push back against this highly accessible text, jumping off from it into more complex discussions as helpful. Of course, Father Koterski also comes at this material from a robust Catholic perspective, and that interpretation might be what is setting some earlier reviewers off here. Nevertheless, none of us has a copyright on the interpretation of the medieval scholastic philosophers, and there are many valid ways to interpret them. As far as I can tell, Koterski's only sin is that he fails to accept a certain secular consensus of interpretation in parts of the book, but his take is quite valid. Don't let ideology scare you off from reading this one: It's quite good.

The Basics

ThinkAgain (see below) was too hard on this book. It's better than one-star.

"An Introduction to Medieval Philosophy" was written to give beginners an overview of the basic themes and problems that shaped medieval philosophy (the subtitle is "Basic Concepts"). Separate chapters deal with subjects such as God, universals, morality, and the like. The writing is clear. I especially liked the summary of natural law.

That said, philosophy students will not get much from the book, since no argument is unpacked in depth. History students will get more out of it, but even they might be disappointed by the arrangement of topics (thematic not chronological) and by the absence of biographic or social background information. Maybe theology students would be the best audience, or anyone else wondering about the support that reason can lend to religious faith.

I'm just an interested layman who wanted a painless introduction to medieval philosophy and theology. The book suited me fine. If nothing else, it showcases the diversity and creativity of medieval philosophy, and will inspire many readers to delve further into the subject. Maybe that's all we should expect from an introduction.

About the Author
John Galsworthy was a Nobel-Prize (1932) winning English dramatist, novelist, and poet born to an upper-middle class family in Surrey, England. He attended Harrow and trained as a barrister at New College, Oxford. Although called to the bar in 1890, rather than practise law, Galsworthy travelled extensively and began to write.

It was as a playwright Galsworthy had his first success. His playslike his most famous work, the series of novels comprising The Forsyte Sagadealt primarily with class and the social issues of the day, and he was especially harsh on the class from which he himself came.

Galsworthy is a wonderful writer. I am rating this edition which appears to have been printed from a Kindle file. There is no publisher, the page numbers are on bottom left of each page, the binding is cheap, there is no table of contents. The cover is attractive in order to sell the book on-line but this is not a published book, merely a print-out of text. Avoid this.

Dark and Deliciously Mean

I'm glad I found this book. The characters are flawed and unlikeable, but it is written in a way that you want to know what happens to them, whether they will get what they deserve. In a way, it read like a study for the Forsythe Saga. Similar character development.

excellent Galsworthy novel

An outstanding effort by Galsworthy. Quite different from the Forsyte series and other novels of his that I've read. A bit like Hardy's Well Beloved, but more realistic. The 3-episode format was very effective, with some sparkling moments in each part. The free Kindle edition is a good one.
