Good Read!

I was pretty excited to read this book! It's the first single-author short story collection I've had in over a year. A big problem I find in the single-author collections is the lack of diversity or telling the same stories in a different tone. Let me tell you, that is no issue here. This compilation has all sexes, sexualities, religions, races, and Alex Clermont pulls them off wonderfully. They also all have very different story lines! That is no easy feat. I found his stories to be full of life, and even the stories I wasn't a huge fan of were still good. To accomplish that with shorts can be difficult even as a big-publisher author. I normally try to pick a favorite story out of the group, but in this case, I liked most of them; it would be hard to pick a single favorite. I'm interested in reading more from him in the future and I'm glad I took a chance on him. If you enjoy short stories and look for diversity in your books, this will be a fantastic read for you! I'm giving the collection 4/5 stars because a few of the stories felt a bit flat to me, but I still enjoyed the book as a whole. You may have a different opinion, it's worth checking out!

Clever...Bold...New York!

There are people who labor under the impression that the final word on what it means to be a modern day New Yorker rests with the works of writers that are known as experts on sexuality, race, and relationships. They're wrong. Alex Clermont, presents various incidents revolving around these topics in short stories using characters made up of black, brown, and white Americans. I don't use the term American lightly, as this collection of predicaments could take place in many American cities; hence, the stories will be relatable to anyone reading them.
I was particularly taken by the clever characterization that gave competent clues to determine the age and race of the characters without using banal descriptions like: Jim was a seventeen-year-old African American kid moving from a small South Carolina town to the Big Apple. The book touched on the life of a woman who has it all, but not a man; a teenaged boy assaulting his girlfriend for teasing him; amongst others. The stories crossed many lives, races, and age brackets. The only con of the collection was a lack of dramatic tension in the stories. Sure, they had conflict, but most of it was internal.
In a nutshell, Clermont, exposes life full of "New York Values" to borrow a phrase from 2016 presidential candidate Ted Cruz. Only Clermont gets away with airing out tales about New York residents, because he is one.

Nicely done; a good read

As a young, up-and-coming writer, Alex Clermont has a great sense for time and place in these stories. Moving though various parts of NYC (and in a one story back a few decades), he does a nice job of capturing the feel of the space his characters inhabit. The dialogue is always true, never forced and at times you may *think* mundane, but it always leads somewhere that makes the reader think. In fact, it wasn't until a few days after finishing some of these stories that I felt what the author was getting at. A few of the stories have even stayed with me as of this writing. YOU, ME AND THE REST OF US is not a ground breaking piece of literary fiction, but I don't think the author intended it to be. Instead, it is a thought-provoking collection of stories about everyone around us: people of various colors, ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations; people that cross our paths every day that we never give a thought to. These are the stories of their everyday lives and how they do matter, whether we know it or not.
