The Smith Thompson was one of those “ordinary” Liberty ships that did her job during extraordinary times. One thing struck me that conveys the sense of urgency those many years ago, and that was the fact that within 30 days of the Smith Thompson’s completion, she was crossing the Pacific Ocean with her first load of war materiel! The story that follows chronicles one man’s version of a typical voyage aboard a World War II Liberty ship. The man at the center of the story is Albert F. Miller, or “Al” as he was called by his friends and family. The story being told here is by Al’s grandson, Steve Miller. The story set here is intended to provide enjoyment and some nostalgia for the reader; not to be a textbook or reference manual. The public then and now is ignorant about the Merchant Marine, in that merchant seamen in World War II suffered more deaths per capita than any branch of the U.S. military. In fact, the War Shipping Administration deliberately refused to reveal the casualty figures during the war in order to avoid creating a shortage of volunteers. When all is said and done with this story, I hope the reader will come to understand what it was like to serve aboard an armed merchant vessel, as it was for the vast majority of those that served. Merchant marine history

For history buffs, there is no greater pleasure than to find a book that covers unexplored territory. While there are thousands of books that cover the history of the worlds navies in WWII, this is the most informative book I have seen that addresses life in the Merchant Marine service. The book covers one specific individuals career, but at the same time makes clear the experiences that affected thousands of his peers. Of particular interest to me were the numerous factoids spread through the book about the relationships between the active duty navy and the merchant marine, and how they organized and integrated the 'civilian' culture and military needs into a working whole. This volume is truly a gap filler for anyone who has an interest in how the millions upon millions of tons of war materials magically appeared in the front lines in all theaters. I enjoyed the authors conversational approach in his writing, as he told his story without the dryness that some histories exhibit. Highly recommended!First Sailing of the S.S. I know someone who sailed on the USS Smith Thompson, a Navy destroyer, in WWI. That ship was sunk at sea in 1936. According to my sources "as of 2005, NO other ships have been named Smith Thompson.

From the author to the readers: It is a fact that only one U.S. Navy combatant vessel, a destroyer, carried Smith Thompson's name. The destroyer was commissioned in 1919. The Smith Thompson destroyer was part of the Navy's WW I build-up of combatant vessels. This particular class of destroyer was universally known as a "Four Piper," referring to the four smoke stacks on the ship. With WW I ending in November 1918, the Navy's Bureau of Construction and Repair began canceling excesss Four Piper purchase orders, or reducing P.O. order quantities and/or moving scheduled delivery dates further into the future. Since the Smith Thompson was already under construction, the Navy authorized her completion, but delayed the delivery date. In the 1930s most of the Four Pipers were mothballed. Eventually the Four Pipers became the 50 destroyers delived to Great Britain under the Lend-Lease Act. The Smith Thompson's namesake was the Navy Secretary during the James Monroe presidency. Thompson was the only cabinet member who served all eight years of the Monroe administration. Thompson was appointed and served as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice the final 20 years of his life. Although Justice Thompson served his country well, his name has not appeared on any U.S. ship since the WW II Liberty ship. Both the British and American navies commission new ships with names previously used on another ship. The criteria for perpetuating a ship's name is usually based on the namesake's significant importantance in American History. Smith Thompson's contribution is not as significant as someone like Abraham Lincoln, for instance.
