About the Author
Born in 1932 in Fukuoka, Japan, Sensei Masataka Mori is an 8th-dan Karate instructor, Technical Advisor, and International Director of the Japan Karate Association (JKA). He is also Chairman and Chief Instructor of JKA Shotokan Karate-do International (SKDI). A disciple of of the late Sensei Funakoshi, founder of the JKA, Sensei Mori was charged with spreading the teachings of karate-do internationally. To that end he has taught in such countries as Canada, France, Great Britain and Venezuela, and has presided over the primary dojo of the New York region since 1967. He has held teaching positions at both SUNY Stony Brook University and the City University of New York.

Fundamentally Essential -- A real learning tool

This is a seminal work. It is clear that the author put his heart and soul not just into explaining the physics of the sport but also the philosophy behind it. The illustrations are marvelous. I bought this book for the teenage son of a friend of mine who has been practicing karate since he was a child and my friend tells me the book made a huge difference in her son's performance. The copy, she says, is completely dog-eared (minor complaint -- the paper weight is a little light, maybe thicker paper would have made the book too bulky?). That aside, this book is a must-have for anyone serious about true Karate, beginners and black belts alike. I'd like to add that I suspect the spelling-challenged reviewer below (Ramos) has never even seen the book. His diatribe seems like a partisan attack. For my part, I don't care about inter-club rivalries. Such attacks fly in the face of the precepts of the dojo-kun. I'm glad I ignored that negative review and I think you will be, too.

Very good

I consider this book to be in an elite group of publications on Karate-do.
It contains simple illustrations and explanations which are easy to understand but will make a huge impact to your training or teaching.
A must have for instructors and a good addition to student learning material.

Like the subtlety of its design

As the title suggests this is a book that is geared towards the first steps of karate but the cover shows a hint that this is a special book. Like the subtlety of its design, its colours and its fonts, the contents also present Mori's particular brand of Shotokan karate that seems uninfluenced by trends or popular themes. You really do have to read the words for they are chosen carefully and there is depth in their meaning if you care to look for it. I dropped a star because I think the concept of the book is so good that it's a shame it stops only with the simplest of basics. It doesn't look like there are any more books in this form to come either but I might be wrong. I do think it will become a collector's item though.
