Martin Luther's Commentary on the Psalms is, to this reviewer's mind, among the few superlative treatments of those 150 gems of worship, for the reason that Luther is able to combine scholarship and passion. Fr. Carlos G. Valles, like Zephania Kameeta of Namibia, follows in that rich tradition with his Psalms for Contemplation. Fr. Valles is a Spanish priest working in India and writing in Hindi. This English translation, therefore, marks a point on a long cultural and linguistic journey. The editors use a genderinclusive translation of the Psalms, from which the author's feelings and responses emanate. The result is an invitation to the reader, as Fr. Valles says, to find a new personal song in the old Biblical forms. This is a formidable undertaking. The original power of language and titanic emotions of the Psalms dwarfs contemporary expression. Add to that the elliptical history from Spanish mind to Hindi statement to English translation and it should not surprise the reader to feel a weakening of utterance. These offerings must be read, therefore, as a parallel meditation rather than as a substitute statement. In that context, and not expecting the ancient cadences, the reader can be grateful to Fr. Psalms for Contemplation

I have just attended three lectures by Carlos G. Valles S.J. in Buenos Aires. This particular book of his delves into the poetry behind the Psalms, so often unnoticed, and reaches within, giving us a new insight into prayer. What should we look for? How should we pray? A first reading will lead you into a new realm of thought and from thence, a new depth within yourself. Having lived in India for the last 50 years, have allowed Valles to use alternate philosophical trends of thought. He blends them into the Christian faith, furthering thus the concept behind Ecumenism. The plurality of thought in his work is both enriching and inspiring. It is also an example of globalization's driving force. He gives us spiritual weapons with which to face the hardships and difficulties of today's mutable world. I live in Buenos Aires and he visits us every two years. His lectures are a joy and an injection of HOPE. At 75, he has his own Web page ... and e-mail, so as to be in communion with what technology and communications are doing to the world we live in.
