About the Author
Douglas Reeman joined the Navy in 1941. He did convoy duty in the navy in the Atlantic, the Arctic, and the North Sea, and later served in motor torpedo boats. He has written over thirty novels under his own name and more than twenty best-selling historical novels featuring Richard Bolitho under the pseudonym Alexander Kent.
David Rintoul is a stage and television actor. A former student of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, he has worked extensively with the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has also appeared regularly on BBC television, starring as Mr. Darcy in the 1980 adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" and as Doctor Finlay in the television series of the same name.

Interesting variation on the naval adventure story

"In war it is inevitable that only one side can triumph, but honour and self-sacrifice are not the sole attributes of the victors". Douglas Reeman's words, from the prefatory blurb, put this novel accurately in context. Surprisingly and most effectively, its hero is not a Royal Navy skipper or even an American sailor, but the captain of a German cruiser. In 1944, when many Germans can already see the writing on the wall, Kapitaen zur See Dieter Hechler takes Prinz Luitpold, a Hipper class 8-inch cruiser, on a last daring commerce raid across the Atlantic.
The Hippers, formidable on paper, did not live up to their promise - partly due to unreliable machinery, and even more to inconsistent, vacillating official policy. This book suggests how much better they could have done in the hands of resolute and independent commanders. Even Hechler finds himself under the thumb of an unpleasant Nazi admiral with a fraction of his talent (a recurrent theme in Reeman's books), possibly a fatal handicap when it comes to the inevitable confrontation with the individually weaker but more numerous British warships.
As usual Douglas Reeman's expertise shows through every page. His description of life in Nazi Germany after four years of total war is no less deft and convincing. This is a splendid yarn of war at sea, but it also has a powerful human dimension. Sacrifice, cruelty, compassion, forgiveness... all the emotions of human beings pushed to, and beyond, their limits. Regardless of who they are, or which country's flag is fluttering from the mast.

3 tattered swastikas for a weaker than usual effort

Douglas Reeman is the most prolific novelist of those who have written about WWII at sea. Perhaps it's not surprising that he should turn his hand at writing a novel set in the German Navy. Reeman has demonstrated a respect for the German sailors and their professionalism, but definitely not their cause, in other novels. In The Iron Pirate he further demonstrates that respect by setting the action on a German heavy cruiser after D-Day in 1944. The intrepid crew must break out of the Baltic and into the Atlantic to disrupt the vast flow of men and material heading to Western Europe. Can the crew do it? Of course not; we all know how the war ended. The biggest questions are; how much damage will they do before they are sunk and who will survive the final confrontation?
Unlike other Reeman novels, The Iron Pirate really is far-fetched. It was too much of a stretch for me to supply a willing suspension of disbelief that a German cruiser could break out into the Atlantic in 1944 and not be caught and sunk immediately. After all, this was a time when a U-boat sticking its periscope above water during the day often brought immediate attack from the air.
Reeman also places a love interest for the captain on board in the person of a female Luftwaffe pilot. I suppose if one can believe the break out, then one can believe this. The cruise is further complicated by the presence of an admiral on board and a secret cargo. The story has some echoes of the Bismarck and Jervis Bay episodes and has Reeman's typically well written action scenes.
Ultimately, The Iron Pirate is just too much of stretch. The formula is the same; strong captain, some tension between the captain and first officer, much tension between the captain and his superior, a woman to give the captain a reason to carry on, and a deadly mission. The writing is no worse than his other efforts and he build suspense steadily until the climax but it's his weak premise that hurts this one.

Not up to Reeman's Usual standards

I've read most of Douglas Reeman's and Alexander Kent's books. I expected the usual Reeman treatment this time but the Iron Pirate was so bad I was unable to force down the whole thing.
It starts adequately enough with Reeman's cruiser mimicking some of the actual operations of the Prinz Eugen in the summer of 1944 but after chapter one the novel comes apart. The story is too far fetched and has too many jarring technical details wrong. Russia bound convoys would be steaming EAST across the atlantic, not west. American submarines didn't have snorkels in 1944. No way a cruiser could transit the Iceland Faroes gap in clear weather without being spotted. Escort carriers did not hold position in a convoys screen. Non-japanese submarines can't fire torpedoes at a cruiser on the horizon and hit anything. etc etc.
After the first chapter the story lurches from one tired cliche to another. From the murder of the jewish slaves by the SS to the incompetent gay admiral to the female Luftwaffe pilot. Nothing fits together into an even slightly believable story.
This would have read better as one of Eric Flint's parallel universe stories. As WWII combat, it just doesn't cut it.
